Outreach Leader


New York City Relief is a mobile outreach to the poor and homeless that empowers volunteers to consistently and compassionately connect people in need with resources that lead to life transformation.

Job Summary,

To help foster a supportive and encouraging environment for volunteers serving for one day, one week or our repeat volunteers.  Oversee the training of all volunteers, the coordination of volunteers serving during outreaches, effectively and consistently communicate with trip leaders and base teams,  as well as conduct one on one Life Care Visits with guests that come to our outreach locations in need of resources. This position reports directly to Brett Hartford, Outreach Director.

To be successful in this role,

The Outreach Leader must exhibit the following:

  • Love for those who are experiencing homelessness as well as those who are volunteering to serve them.  You will inevitably lead packs of teenaged volunteers, you must rise to the challenge and light them on fire for the PRIVILEGE it is to serve others.

  • Excellent communication skills.  Bilingual a plus.

  • Leadership skills; ability to motivate a team of volunteers.  More importantly, an ability to LEAD SELF. Be the example you want to see in others.

  • Flexibility; we do what needs to be done to get the job done, that’s not always an exact science.

  • Appreciation for diversity; no one is excluded from our care.

  • The ability to self-manage & work independently, as well as knowing when to shift gears into TEAMWORK.

  • A healthy relationship with feedback; knowing it’s value, it’s power and its’ importance in shaping performance standards.  

  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.  While we are extremely cautious and mindful of the need to advocate for our guests, it is a delicate balance to manage the overwhelming volume of need with efficiency and grace.

  • An effective balance of street smarts and church smarts.

  • Humility.  And, a true servant’s heart.  Ego is not your Amigo.

  • Public Speaking skills a plus.

  • Problem solving skills.  A positive ‘can do’ attitude goes a long way.  A solutions-based mindset is our GOLD STANDARD.  

  • ENDURANCE in the face of the elements.  That means indoors, outdoors, heat, cold, rain, snowstorm, Bomb Cyclone.  Think ‘Postman on Steroids.’ We’re not gonna lie . . . . . we go where few will & when no one else can.

  • Safe and confident driver.  Clean license. You WILL drive that big bus in midtown Manhattan.  Not for the faint of heart. Please don’t overlook the significance of this requirement.

  • Willingness to learn new technology skills.   G-suite is our jam.


Daily duties include preparing soup and beverages, loading vehicles with supplies and food, directing volunteers, connecting with guests on the streets, and initiating the steps that lead to life transformation.

Volunteer Training,

NYCR is an organization that trains and utilizes volunteers to have a large and active role in connecting with and caring for those we are serving at each outreach.  Outreach Leaders brief and train volunteers daily, giving them tips and best ways to engage and care for our guests both on the bus from the serving window, as well as on the streets.


During the outreach the Outreach Leader is the main point of contact for those we serve in helping them get connected to resources such as shelters, job information, detox programs, clothing, drop-in centers, and health clinics.  The Outreach Leader’s responsibility is to conduct Life Care Visits where we connect with our guests, gather information, and refer them to the best resources that meet their specific needs.


Outreach Leaders love and care for people who are broken and hurting on a regular basis--listening to their needs, sharing the gospel, praying for them, and  encouraging them along their journey.


All staff participate in regular Tuesday morning meetings for times of worship, prayer, discipleship and business meetings. These are key times of community building, deepening of relationship and accountability that create a culture of interdependence. Each staff member is expected to periodically lead times of prayer or Bible study. All staff also participate periodically in The Relief Bus outreach and minister to the poor and homeless through prayer and ministry of the Word of God with individuals.

New York City Relief is a Christian ministry that has been helping the homeless in the NYC metro area for over 29 years. NYCR consists of two outreach models; The Relief Bus and The Relief Co-op.  We are customized, mobile resource centers for people struggling with homelessness. We serve delicious soup and fresh Portuguese rolls to draw people in and make friends. Once staff and volunteers build trust, we try to connect our guests to shelter, job training/employment, medical help, drug/alcohol rehabilitation and a relationship with Jesus Christ.
