Major Donor Officer
New York City Relief is a growing Christian non-profit organization that operates a mobile outreach to the homeless. The organization has a budget of 3.5 million dollars and mobilizes over 7,000 volunteers a year to connect the homeless to resources that lead to life transformation.
To Be Successful,
The Major Donor Officer will focus on identification, cultivation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors targeting gifts in the range of $5,000+ annually on behalf of New York City Relief (NYCR); maximizing gifts to New York City Relief; establishing long-term relationships with major donors; and working in collaboration with other members of the development team to meet NYCR’s fundraising objectives. The Major Donor Officer will report directly to the Director of Development.
The Major Donor Officer will actively participate in the implementation of NYCR’s philanthropic campaigns and plans, focusing on fundraising priorities and involving volunteers and other stakeholders in the realization of the organization’s strategic goals. The Major Donor Officer will work directly with other fundraisers, senior staff and volunteer leadership.
Responsibilities, but not limited to,
Collaborate with the Director of Development to establish clear and measurable fundraising goals for the development team and assist in the achievement of said goals.
Develop and execute strategies to secure support from individuals at the leadership gifts level ($5,000 and above) as part of a comprehensive fundraising plan.
Identify, cultivate, steward and solicit a pool of 50-75 prospects; establish and maintain long-term donor relationships. Develop written solicitation plans for new and current major gift prospects within prospect portfolio, develop relationships with prospects through various cultivation calls, letters and handwritten notes, complete at least 60-75 significant contacts per year with prospects from portfolio, and solicit and close gifts.
Adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate humility, optimism and convey sensitivity to donor needs.
Maintain professionalism in all departmental activities and outreach while promoting confidentiality of privileged information.
Participate in Major Donor Update Meeting, host Prospective Donor Bus Days and communicate with outreach team.
Schedule and host small group introductory events.
Prepare reports, briefing materials, correspondence, proposals, Donor Perfect database updates, and related documents for solicitation of leadership gift prospects.
Schedule and script joint visits with the Vice President for Advancement and board members, and volunteers when appropriate.
Support volunteer networks and assist in the identification, recruitment, and scheduling of volunteers as needed.
Represent NYCR at events.
Implement and Provide oversight and supervision of the prospect research and management function.
Directly manage donor prospecting volunteers, offering guidance, direction and expertise to develop a robust gift pipeline.
Provide oversight of the donor relations/stewardship function. Directly manage donor relations/ stewardship function, offering guidance, direction and expertise in growing a donor stewardship program.
Provide oversight of the planned giving options. Directly manage systems and resources supporting planned and deferred giving, offering guidance, direction, and support in growing a robust and mature program for securing planned, deferred and complex charitable gifts.
Travel, as necessary, to accomplish above.
All staff participates in regular Tuesday morning meetings for a time of worship, prayer, discipleship, and organizational updates. These are key times of community building, deepening relationships, and accountability that create a culture of interdependence. Each staff member is expected to periodically lead times of prayer or Bible study.

New York City Relief is a Christian ministry that has been helping the homeless in the NYC metro area for over 29 years. NYCR consists of two outreach models; The Relief Bus and The Relief Co-op. We are customized, mobile resource centers for people struggling with homelessness. We serve delicious soup and fresh Portuguese rolls to draw people in and make friends.
