Outreach Leader

Reporting to the Director of Outreach, the Outreach leader will be responsible for compassionately and skillfully carrying out weekly Relief Bus and Relief Co-Op outreaches to our neighbors struggling with homelessness in the New York City metropolitan area. 

The goal of our outreaches are to lead guests into Life Care Visits led by our Outreach Team. A Life Care Visit is a 1x1 meeting where our Outreach Leaders provide hope and resources to our guests through individualized action plans. We provide hope — by listening, encouraging and praying with our friends who are struggling — and then we provide resources — by connecting guests to emergency shelter, job programs, detox or drug rehabilitation. The Outreach Leader will become well-versed in the resources available throughout New York City and the surrounding areas, and will be responsible for meeting with our guests and writing referrals that meet individual needs.

Daily duties include preparing soup and beverages, loading vehicles with supplies and food, and directing volunteers.

Volunteer Training,
Volunteers who serve with New York City Relief receive an orientation either at the New York City Relief Base or at the outreach location. Outreach Leaders brief and train teams daily on the details of our outreach models, giving them rules and tips on how to participate in the outreach.

Outreach Leaders regularly encourage guests who come to receive resources from the Relief Bus and the Relief Co-Op by sharing the Gospel, listening to people in need, praying for them, and loving those who are hurting.

All staff participates in regular Tuesday morning meetings for a time of worship, prayer, discipleship, and organizational updates. These are key times of community building, deepening of relationships, and accountability that create a culture of interdependence. Each staff member is expected to periodically lead times of prayer or Bible study.

Work schedule and Benefits, 
Tuesday to Saturday. When leading daytime outreaches, the schedule is 7AM to 4PM. When leading nighttime outreaches, the schedule is 3PM to 11PM. Generous paid vacation package.  Health Insurance provided.  Paid sick time and personal days. Paid maternity and paternity leave.

New York City Relief is a Christian ministry that has been helping the homeless in the NYC metro area for over 29 years. NYCR consists of two outreach models; The Relief Bus and The Relief Co-op.  We are customized, mobile resource centers for people struggling with homelessness.   We serve delicious soup and fresh Portuguese rolls to draw people in and make friends. Once staff and volunteers build trust, we try to connect our guests to shelter, job training/employment, medical help, drug/alcohol rehabilitation and a relationship with Jesus Christ.
