City Relief Outreach Leader

Overview 

This position is on the frontlines of our mobile outreach operations, and relentlessly seeks to fulfill our mission on the streets of New York and New Jersey. The Outreach Leader exists to create a hospitable environment for various stakeholders that cultivates community and optimizes our ability to help someone move from Crisis to Stabilization. Hospitality includes engagement, security, outreach “flow”, and service delivery and is informed by the unique needs of individuals experiencing homelessness. 

The Outreach Leader works on a team of highly motivated, creative and flexible individuals to host outdoor outreach events regardless of environmental conditions. A high level of event management is required to coordinate onsite volunteers, collaborate with community partners, and engage guests that come to our outreach locations in need of resources. This position reports directly to the Director of Outreach or the Director of NJ Programs, respectively. 


Responsibilities 

1. Outreach Coordination: 

● Serve as a “host” of our weekly pop-up outreach events and/or mobile outreaches; oversee the totality of outreach operations (i.e.“flow”) of service delivery and guest engagement 

● Foster an outreach environment that is welcoming, safe, and hospitable and where guests' physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are being addressed.

● Lead and direct onsite program team and volunteers to prepare all outreach supplies and equipment for each outreach, both at the base and on location, 3-4 times weekly 

● Work collaboratively with Guests Services, Community Partners and Volunteer teams prior to, during, and after outreach to ensure all positions are filled on Outreach and lines of communication are effective. 

● Implement safety and security protocols with guests, volunteers, and other stakeholders as needed.

● Transport staff, volunteers, and outreach equipment to and from NYC via City Relief fleet. 

● Work with the Manager of Outreach Operations & Fleet Manager to oversee warehouse deliveries, bus organization, kitchen maintenance, supply inventory, etc. 

2. Volunteer & Guest Engagement: 

● Brief and train volunteers, teaching them our philosophy of service and ways to effectively engage and care for our guests on the streets 

● Work collaboratively with the volunteer team to intentionally engage volunteers in outreach duties regardless of their experience and/or capacity; Mobilize senior volunteers and interns to support outreach operations beyond standard volunteer roles 

● Connect with Service Teams visiting from across the country throughout their service week; provide orientations, debriefs, and times of morning devotion as needed 

● Actively pursue and engage guests on the streets, welcoming them into community with staff, volunteers, community partners, and one another

● Assist the Guest Services team by conducting Life Care Visits (incl. care coordination), by connecting guests to services and supporting them in the steps that lead to life transformation. 

Leadership Competencies

● Extend love and compassion to those who are experiencing homelessness, as well as those who are volunteering to serve them. 

● Engage and be around people the entire day (beginning of work day to end of work day). 

● Utilize excellent communication skills, including active listening.

● Be flexible and problem solve. We do what needs to be done to get the job done; that’s not always an exact science. 

● Appreciate diversity among those we serve and serve with; no one is excluded from our care. 

● Be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment. 

Physical Requirements: 

● Operate equipment and motor vehicles; maintain a clean driving record.

● Lift and carry up to 30 lbs. regularly, occasionally up to 50 lbs. 

● Be able to be outside on your feet for several hours, in any weather condition.

● Travel between New Jersey and New York City is required. 

● Comfortable working in various technology platforms. 

Preferred Qualifications 

● Public Speaking skills are a plus 

● Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin/Cantonese) 

● Experience with Conflict Management and Crisis Intervention 

● CPR and First Aid certified

● CDL with air brakes licensed 

Hours: Full time Tuesday – Saturday, plus flexibility when needed for additional outreach needs. 

Ministry: City Relief is a Christ-centered organization, which means that Outreach Leaders love and care for people who are broken and hurting on a regular basis--listening to their needs, sharing the gospel, praying for them, and encouraging them along their journey. 

Community: All staff participate in regular Tuesday morning meetings for times of worship, prayer, discipleship and business meetings. These are key times of community building, deepening of relationship and accountability that create a culture of interdependence. Each staff member is expected to periodically lead times of prayer or Bible study. 

Benefits: City Relief offers medical dental, Simple IRA and generous vacation benefits. This is in addition to three organizational vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Summer holidays. Salary range for this position is $56k-$60k commensurate with experience and CDL license status.
